The federal trial of Luigi Mangione, suspected of killing the head of the largest American health insurance group in 2024, has been postponed to January 2027, according to court documents released on Thursday. Luigi Mangione, 27, faces charges in both federal and New York state courts. His federal trial, originally scheduled for October, will now take place on January 25, 2027.
His lawyers had requested delays in both trials, arguing that tight deadlines would make adequate defense preparation impossible. The state trial will be held on September 8, after also being postponed on Wednesday. In both cases, Luigi Mangione, who pleaded not guilty, faces the possibility of life in prison. In the United States, a defendant can be tried at both state and federal levels for the same crime, even though the charges may differ as in this case.

The murder of Brian Thompson, a senior executive at UnitedHealthcare, in December 2024, caught on surveillance cameras, shocked the United States and highlighted the deep public anger towards the country’s healthcare system. Luigi Mangione was arrested five days after the murder at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania, 370 kilometers from the crime scene, following a tip from an employee.
In New York state, he is charged with murder and faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted. In federal court, he faces two charges of harassment related to stalking the victim, and carries the same sentence.
