Donald Trump questions US membership in NATO
- Donald Trump questioned the United States’ membership in NATO on Wednesday, April 1.
- He referred to the alliance as a “paper tiger.”
- Former American ambassador Charles Adams reacted to the recent statements by the White House tenant on LCI.
A “paper tiger,” according to Donald Trump. The American president renewed his criticisms of NATO on Wednesday, April 1. The White House tenant, annoyed by the positions of several countries in the Middle East conflict, mentioned the possibility of the United States withdrawing from the alliance.
Invited on LCI, Charles Adams, former United States ambassador, responded to Donald Trump’s remarks. “It is more about Europe reflecting on American usefulness within NATO. It turns out that the United States is the ally that ultimately only contributes to creating confusion and chaos around the world. It is Europe that should ask this question,” he stressed.
Donald Trump has ramped up criticisms of NATO in recent weeks as the next summit of the alliance is scheduled to start in early July in Turkey. “I do not take Donald Trump’s threats and Marco Rubio’s observations on this matter, as well as any other, seriously,” added the former United States ambassador.
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, when the Middle East conflict is resolved, the United States “will need to reevaluate” its relationship with NATO.
