Panic spreads in the Gulf. A few hours after the start of American and Israeli strikes on Iran on Saturday, and the Iranian response that followed, a fire broke out on the iconic artificial Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, where witnesses reported hearing an explosion, followed by thick black smoke rising from a hotel and ambulances heading towards the scene.
“We Will Sleep in the Hallway”
“We heard this explosion,” confirms Clement Guerrand, a French resident of Dubai. “When I entered a pharmacy, we were immediately evacuated and urgently asked to return home to take shelter.”
According to her, the events took place in “a fairly recent neighborhood” where “people live very securely.” “It’s astounding, in one of the safest countries in the world,” she continues. With her family, she will now spend the next hours sheltered. “Tonight, we are all refugees,” confirms the French resident. “Many neighbors have moved to the parking lots for safety. We will sleep with my son in the hallway of our home, to be as far as possible from the windows.”
