King Charles will make his first state visit to the United States at the end of April, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. This trip has caused some controversy in the UK, following recent insults from Donald Trump.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit the United States at the end of April, as announced on Tuesday by Buckingham Palace. This visit comes amidst ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and tensions between Washington and London.

Their itinerary will “highlight the historical ties and current bilateral relations between the UK and the US, in light of the 250th anniversary of American independence,” according to a statement.

The exact dates of the visit will be announced later by the palace.

Following their visit to the US, the king and queen will travel to Bermuda, marking the monarch’s first visit to a UK Overseas Territory since ascending to the throne in September 2022.

“On the recommendation of Her Majesty’s government and at the invitation of the President of the United States, the king and queen will make a state visit to the United States of America. Their majesties’ program will celebrate the historical ties and modern bilateral relationship between the UK and the US, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence,” said the king’s official account.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump expressed excitement for the visit on his social network Truth Social, stating, “Melania and I are pleased to announce that Their Majesties, the king and queen of the United Kingdom, will visit the United States for a historic state visit from April 27 to 30, including a magnificent gala dinner at the White House on the evening of April 28. This memorable event will be especially significant this year as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great country. I look forward to spending time with the king, for whom I have immense respect. It will be GREAT!”

London and Washington, tied by 250 years of history, have a “special relationship” characterized by close diplomatic, military, and economic ties.

During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II was received four times on state visits to the US, including in 1976 to celebrate the bicentennial of American independence and in 1991, where she made a historic address to the American Congress.

Known for being an admirer of the royal family, Donald Trump expressed his eagerness to see the king during this visit.
