Everything ended well for Chesney, a kangaroo on the run since March 24th. His rescue was filmed and broadcast on Facebook. The marsupial lived at Sunshine Farm in Necedah, Wisconsin, United States.

He escaped from his enclosure after being scared by stray dogs. The 16-month-old kangaroo climbed his enclosure, jumped over the fence, “headed toward my driveway and bolted,” described the owner of the children’s farm to ABC7. Quickly, searches were initiated and teams decided to use a company with thermal drones.

Failed attempts

If the boss of this company was used to looking for lost animals, finding a kangaroo was a first for him. He explained to Associated Press (AP) that Chesney’s thermal footprint was unique: “It almost looked like a dinosaur running through the woods.” He added: “He has a long tail, and the way he moved and hopped, that’s the only way I can describe him.”

Several times, the kangaroo was seen and even caught, but he always managed to escape. On Friday, he was spotted again at the end of the day, nestled under a tree. Once again, he managed to flee.

A book about his adventures

The next day, the teams returned with the kangaroo’s favorite treats and pieces of fabric soaked in his scent. After a bit of waiting, Chesney finally showed up. “He was very calm when he approached, it was clear he wasn’t in fight or flight mode, so I followed the movement,” explained a friend of the farm’s owner to AP. The kangaroo finally came to her.

Chesney is said to be in good health, but a veterinary check-up is required. Following this incredible story, a fan of the farm decided to write a children’s book about Chesney’s adventures. A book that should be offered for sale to cover some of the research costs incurred.
