Summary
Local politics shake up Vierzon FC. After the victory of the far-right in the local elections, president Marvin Sampson announces his departure, citing a tense atmosphere and the need to protect the club.

A Decision to “Protect the Club”

Since March 22nd, in Vierzon, the political and social climate remains tense following a historic upheaval at the polls. Yannick Le Roux’s victory at the head of a far-right union list, with 47.9% of the votes, ended nearly 90 years of communist governance. This change displeased many, including the president of the town’s football club, competing in National 3.

After more than two and a half years at Vierzon FC, Marvin Sampson announced on March 24th that he would step down before the summer, expressing his disagreement with the new political direction and the values of the new mayor. “I sense a lot of negative signals, so I’ll stop. I think there may be a personal issue. I don’t want to misrepresent my association. The most important thing for me is the financial and sporting health of the club,” he explained to France Info.

The new mayor, on the other hand, aims to reassure: “No budget cuts. No heads will roll.” He does mention an upcoming audit on certain associations considered inactive or poorly attended.

Reacting to this resignation, Yannick Le Roux sees it as a “mature decision” involving “politics and sports”: “Noted. Goodbye. Vierzon Football Club existed before him, Vierzon Football Club will exist after him.” He also confirms already working on his successor, deeming the “incident closed.”
