Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, who has become a global star and an icon of the club since his arrival in 2017, will leave Liverpool at the end of the current season, the English club announced on Tuesday, March 24.

“The attacker has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him conclude a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield,” the current English champions wrote. “Salah expressed his desire to make this announcement to the supporters as soon as possible to ensure transparency about his future, out of respect and gratitude towards them.”

The right winger has carved out a place among the legends of Liverpool since his arrival from AS Roma in 2017. Under the red shirt, the No. 11 has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, making him the club’s third-highest goal scorer in history. He has won the English league title twice and a Champions League, along with several other trophies (Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, national cups).

In April 2025, the “pharaoh” extended his commitment to Liverpool FC until 2027, according to the sports press, a logical reward after sparkling months. He was voted the best player of the 2024-2025 season in the Premier League. But his aura has diminished this season, alongside his playing time, due to disappointing individual performances.

Last December, he criticized a situation as “not acceptable, not fair” after being benched for a third consecutive match. “I feel like the club has thrown me under the bus,” the winger told journalists. “I am not the problem, I have done so much for this club. I should not have to fight every day for my position, because I have earned it,” he added. This outspoken criticism led to him being excluded from the squad for one match. His relationship with coach Arne Slot has since normalized, but his future remained uncertain. “The time to fully celebrate his legacy and accomplishments will come later in the year, when he bids farewell to Anfield,” the club wrote.
