While waiting to possibly clinch their first championship ring since 2014 this season, the Spurs claimed their first title on Monday by securing a sixth consecutive victory (136-111) against Miami. Victor Wembanyama (26 points, 15 rebounds, 5 blocks) and his team are champions of the Southwest Division for the first time since the 2016-2017 season.
San Antonio is already assured of not ending the season empty-handed. The future will reveal if Victor Wembanyama, who performed excellently on Monday night, will be awarded the MVP trophy for the first time since joining the NBA (Editor’s note: Defending champion Shai Gilgeous-Alexander seems to have an edge over the Frenchman). Similarly, it will take some time before finding out if the Spurs, who have been unstoppable since the start of the season, will reclaim the championship title that has eluded them since 2014 (which would be their 6th in history).
As we await answers to these questions that will likely keep us in suspense in the upcoming weeks, “Wemby” and his team are already certain of lifting a trophy. Continuing their impressive streak on Monday night – a sixth consecutive victory – with a clear win (136-111) against Miami on a night when the struggling Heat suffered their fifth consecutive defeat, the Texans also benefited from their neighbor and rival Houston’s loss to Chicago, securing the Southwest Division championship, a title they last held in the 2016-2017 season.
Wembanyama Dominates the Heat
It has been a decade of drought for the Spurs, who dominated the Heat from the early minutes of the game. Stronger than their opponents in all aspects, especially in rebounds, the second-best team in the West and the league quickly took the lead (76-58 at halftime) following a remarkable performance by Wembanyama, who only played 26 minutes but still managed to impress with 26 points (11 for 22 shooting), 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
The Chesnay native may not have been in his best form from long-range (1 for 7 on Monday). However, with valuable support from Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper (both scoring 21 points) off the bench, he set the tone and led the way throughout the evening for his teammates, once again becoming a key player in this latest victory (the team’s 54th of the season), with their last loss dating back to March 13th (at home against Denver). San Antonio and Wembanyama will aim for a seventh consecutive win in two days against Memphis.
