Ukrainian Army Develops Artificial Intelligence Weapons

  • The chief of staff of Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the Ukrainian army is developing weapons using artificial intelligence.
  • This includes autonomous systems capable of identifying a target and firing without human involvement.
  • The war in the Middle East has also seen the development of new military uses.

Artificial intelligence is advancing on the front lines in Ukraine. After years of conflict marked by the rise of drones, a new era is beginning, according to Kyrylo Boudanov. The chief of the Ukrainian presidential administration believes that new technologies will significantly impact warfare.

According to Euromaidan Press, the former head of intelligence claims, “Increasing the number of drones alone no longer fundamentally changes the battlefield.” This applies to both the Ukrainian side and the enemy side. “With the available technologies, we have reached our maximum, just like the Russians. The rest is just quantitative growth,” the leader asserts.

Autonomous Systems Will Soon Be a Surprise for the Enemy

If the number of drones reaches a limit, their future use will vary. Particularly in the “full integration” of AI, according to the Ukrainian leader. This will allow the development of autonomous systems, which can identify their target, maneuver, and adjust their aim without constant human involvement. This approach is now almost a reality, claims Kyrylo Boudanov. “They will soon be a surprise for the enemy,” he stated to Euromaidan Press.

Ukraine is not the only country relying on AI for its weaponry. In recent weeks, the conflict in the Middle East has highlighted the importance of this technology in warfare. Besides the use in attack drones and semi-autonomous weapons, one of the most well-known uses of these technologies is the reduction of what the military calls the “kill chain,” the time between target detection and strike.

The US army is using the Maven Smart System (MSS) platform, developed by Palantir, to identify potential targets and prioritize them. According to the Washington Post, Anthropic’s AI model, Claude, is integrated into Maven to enhance its identification and simulation capabilities. Anduril, a young company, provides “one of the main defense systems” against Iranian Shahed drones, as revealed by its president, Matthew Steckman.
