Diego Simeone’s tribute to Antoine Griezmann, who will leave Europe for the MLS at the end of the season, has moved the football world, especially Christophe Dugarry, who reminisced about the “more than successful” career of the 2018 world champion.
This marks the beginning of the final stretch for Antoine Griezmann. The French football legend will leave Atletico Madrid and Europe in June for a final challenge in the MLS in the United States. As he approaches a reunion with FC Barcelona, his former club, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 8, tributes are pouring in for the 2018 world champion. Starting with Diego Simeone, who had particularly touching words for his player, whom he has known since 2014.
“The tribute from Simeone gave me goosebumps. Recognizing all that he has given to this city, to this club… I think this tribute speaks for itself,” notes Christophe Dugarry on the show Rothen s’enflamme.
“Kudos to Simeone and Griezmann. This player has left a mark on me. I will remember it for a very long time,” he adds.
“You can have a huge career and still have some regrets”
Indeed, Antoine Griezmann will have left his mark on the history of the Colchoneros, with over 450 games played and more than 200 goals scored. The only downside: his “sparse” record with the Madrid club, a Europa League and a UEFA Super Cup in 2018, as well as a Spanish Super Cup in 2014.
Does this leave a bitter taste in his career with his “failed” stint at Barcelona? Not at all, according to Christophe Dugarry.
“You can have a huge career and still have some regrets. We all stumble at some point!” he points out. “His time at Barcelona was a failure. But what leaves a bitter taste in my mouth is his finish with the French team. He should have been in this World Cup in the United States.”
Despite some tough moments, Christophe Dugarry – who also played for FC Barcelona – remembers “the passes, the mindset, the smile” of Antoine Griezmann, who has often illuminated the fields with his talent.
“He is an incredible player, he has left his mark on the history of Atletico Madrid, the history of the French team, his career is more than successful. Whether you agree or not, Antoine Griezmann has left his mark on the history of his sport, football,” concludes the RMC columnist.
But before the curtain falls in Europe, the 35-year-old player can still dream of lifting the Champions League at the end of the season. The final challenge of a legendary career.
