Lyon waited their time before folding Wolfsburg.
Defeated 1-0 in the first leg, Lyon, thanks to their players coming off the bench, won 4-0 after extra time against the German club Wolfsburg in the Women’s Champions League quarter-final, securing their spot in the last four.
In the semi-finals, the Lyon team, aiming for a ninth title, will face the reigning champions, Arsenal, just like in 2025. The other semi-final will see Barcelona taking on the German side Bayern Munich.
In the first leg on March 24th in Germany, Lyon had suffered a defeat (1-0) for the first time this season, after a strong display. They conceded a goal scored by Lineth Beerensteyn on a deflected shot by Damaris Egurrola in the 14th minute.
This time, American Lily Yohannes gave Lyon the lead with a shot also deflected by Janina Minge (16th).
The breakthrough came from Lyon’s bench
However, it took extra time for Lyon to make the difference with their substitute players.
After a goal by Marie-Antoinette Katoto, disallowed for an offside by Vicky Becho (99th), Daelle Melchie Dumornay made it 2-0 from a corner played by Selma Bacha after video-assistance confirmation (102nd), before Egurrola, with a header, scored from another Bacha corner (3-0, 105th).
Katoto and Dumornay came on as substitutes in the 69th minute, along with Tabitha Chawinga, who added a fourth goal on a counterattack (4-0, 120th). Egurrola replaced Lindsay Heaps in the 82nd minute.
Like in the first leg, Lyon dominated their limited opponent. However, the players once again showed incredible inaccuracy and displayed offensive weaknesses that could pose a real challenge against Arsenal in the semi-final.
In the end, Lyon’s dominance was highlighted by a total of 39 shots (9 on target) compared to 6, and 19 corners to 2.
Goalkeeper Stina Johannes delivered a good performance, but she truly stood out only against Yohannes (21st), Kadidiatou Diani (26th) and on two attempts by Bacha, including a very good free kick at the end of regulation time (56th, 85th).
