On a series of five winless matches in Ligue 1, OL saw their lead in the Champions League race melt away. But, as they gear up for the final sprint, supporters still believe in the third and fourth places.
February 15, 2026. On this Valentine’s Day weekend, all OL lovers were over the moon. In the 22nd round of Ligue 1, Paulo Fonseca’s players have just defeated Nice (2-0) and secured their thirteenth consecutive victory across all competitions. Holding firm in third place, the Lyonnais now had a five-point lead over OM, eleven points over Lille and Rennes for the last European places. While everyone agreed that this incredible streak would not last, few expected that a month and a half later, there would only be a five-point gap between the third and seventh in the league.
However, this reality has put OL in a tough spot. After a two-week international break, Ligue 1 is set to resume with an exciting final sprint. But in Décines, they hope the last seven games of the season will be of higher quality than the last five. With 47 points currently, OL knows they have no margin for error. Their away game against Angers on Sunday (3 p.m.) needs to kickstart a team that has hit a rough patch.
The fourth place, a false good news?
Hope is still alive among the fans. Even though the situation may be worrying, the return of injured players gives reasons to believe. In a survey by Olympique-et-Lyonnais, the momentum does not seem alarming. On the contrary, returning to the Champions League after six years seems increasingly feasible. 66.2% of voters (1,200) see OL finishing in third or fourth place by the 34th round of Ligue 1.
Nobody imagines a season without
According to summer movements, OL could send a small group of players to the World Cup. These players may not be available or in top form for the start of the competition in early August. On the set of “Tant qu’il y aura des Gones,” our consultants saw this as a poisoned gift, and they are not alone. “Flemme du bourbier qu’est la 4e place qui te tronque la prépa, le mercato et le budget. Autant être 5e,” tweeted @BollyOnFire on our X account.
The OL management has planned several business plans between the Champions League and the Europa League. But everyone obviously hopes for a European qualification for next season to reward the excellent work done since last August. Supporters tend to follow our consultant, as only 6% see OL finishing outside the European places.
