Women are increasingly speaking out to denounce the violence they have suffered. These testimonies help to liberate speech and change the culture of shame. Some actresses are among those raising their voices to denounce sexual violence and power dynamics, especially in the film industry. Judith Godrèche is one of these voices, recounting her experience at age 14 with director Benoît Jacquot, who was 40 at the time.
Later, she accused director Jacques Doillon of sexually assaulting her twice when she was a minor. Juliette Binoche also faced similar violence. “In 1985, during the filming of a scene in ‘Rendez-vous’ by André Téchiné, one of the actors (I don’t know who, and in a way, I don’t want to know) touched me inappropriately,” she revealed in 2023 in Marie Claire. She added, “Whether it was the director’s or the actor’s initiative, I remember being shocked. It was my first major role, and although I didn’t say anything at the time, I still think about it. I should have reacted!”
Juliette Binoche opens up about being groped in first grade. She recounts an incident where a teacher would choose students to read by his desk and often picked her, leading to inappropriate touching. She also shared another assault experience at the age of 11 and a later encounter with a director when she was 18.
Now 62, Juliette Binoche reflects on a recent incident in a film where an actor unexpectedly put her breast in his mouth during a love scene. She felt demeaned but remained silent in shock. While she didn’t name names in the interview, she had previously identified director Pascal Kané who tried to kiss her early in her career. She recalls pushing him away and stating she had a partner, feeling incredulous at his behavior.
