Loana Petrucciani, here in 2022, is the very first star of French reality TV. Before Ayem, Julien Tanti, or Nabilla, there was Loana Petrucciani. The reality TV star was found dead at her home on Wednesday, March 25. She was 48 years old. Thrown in front of the cameras and under the spotlight at the age of 23, she became the embodiment of what reality TV can build and destroy in the blink of an eye.

French viewers discovered reality TV in 2001 on M6. At that time, Alexia Laroche Joubert convinced the channel to launch the very first confinement game inspired by the Dutch format Big Brother. The producer carefully chose her candidates, including Loana Petrucciani, an innocent bimbo with an endearing frankness and a “juicy” past.

When she entered the Loft on April 21, 2001, wearing her iconic crochet bra and turquoise mini-skirt, little did she know that her life would change. A few days later, she was filmed having sex in a pool with Jean-Edouard, and the images were broadcast live. Ten weeks later, she won the show (with Christophe) and a check for 250,000 euros. A huge sum for a woman from a very modest background.

After over two months of confinement, Loana found out that she had become a celebrity and the favorite of the viewers. Due to her provocative profile highlighted by the production, her sincerity visible on the show, and her humane handling of the situation with Jean-Edouard and some of the other “Lofters”, she was invited to TV shows, interviews, and prestigious red carpets alongside global stars.

Born to a gas station attendant father and a housewife mother, Loana quickly capitalized on her immediate success by writing an autobiography titled “She Called Me Miette”, which became a bestseller. She also tried her hand at singing, launched a clothing line in collaboration with La Halle, and introduced a perfume.

As the years passed, Loana participated in other shows like “I’m a Celebrity, Get me out of Here”, “The Angels”, and “The Villa of Broken Hearts”, sporadically appearing on TV sets. She never regained the initial excitement.

Behind the scenes, however, Loana’s life took a dark turn. Her private life was dissected and analyzed by the media, revealing her troubled childhood, abusive father, hidden daughter, failed relationships, and physical transformations due to medication.

Since the early 2010s, Loana has made sporadic comebacks, claiming to be “getting better” on various TV shows and documentaries about her. In 2022, she admitted to briefly being homeless before returning to live with her mother and surviving on welfare. She was ultimately found dead at her home in Nice on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

Loana’s reality TV journey, a tragic heroine of the genre, is both unique as the first of its kind and symbolic of a system that leverages individuals for their marketability while disregarding their vulnerabilities and flaws. Her scars, which were publicly dissected, only reopened over the years.
