Myung-Whun Chung received the prestigious Kumkuan award in 1996, the highest honor given by the South Korean government for his contribution to the country’s musical life.
From 2000 to 2015, Chung served as the musical director of the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, succeeding Marek Janowski. In addition to this role, he was invited to conduct leading orchestras in Europe, the United States, and Asia, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, La Scala in Milan, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle in Dresden, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York, the symphony orchestras of Chicago and Boston, and the orchestras of Cleveland and Philadelphia.
Chung, who is also a trained pianist, performs with the Chung Trio alongside his sisters Kyung-wha, a violinist, and Myung-wha, a cellist.
A committed musician, Chung has been an Ambassador for the United Nations Drug Control Program and was named “Man of the Year” by UNESCO in 1995. He actively works to introduce classical music to young audiences through concerts and educational workshops and has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2008.
