Previously, k-drama fans had the pleasure of seeing XO, Kitty return for a third season on Netflix. The successful series spent several days at the top of the platform’s chart with its red logo.

This season follows the romantic adventures of Kitty Song Covey, played by actress Anna Cathcart. The cast still includes the very handsome Sang Heon Lee as Kitty’s crush, Min Ho.

Behind the eccentric entertainment mogul character, Mr. Moon, is Philippe Lee; at 62 years old, the actor’s athletic physique has earned him the nickname “K-daddy” on set.

Last year, the Korean actor, who studied at the International Center of Glion near Montreux, shared entertaining anecdotes about filming the second season. He also discussed his love for Switzerland and precious memories by Lake Geneva.

If you missed it:

His return to the screen raises intriguing questions about Mr. Moon’s evolution. Revealing his ruthless side, this authoritative “daron” has become the main barrier between Kitty and Min Ho. The gripping plot led us to call Los Angeles for some juicy gossip.

Watson: In this third season, Mr. Moon appears more ruthless than ever. Is this just an impression or is it real?

Philippe Lee: It’s very real. They had to make him a bit more villainous, or rather a bit more of a “ruthless businessman.” The first time, we focused on Mr. Moon’s return and the reunions between Min Ho and him. So, he had to be somewhat cool and make an effort to please his son.

How was it to play this rougher version of Mr. Moon?

It was quite enjoyable. Once again, I found myself in some hilarious situations, including a luxury hotel bathtub, on a yacht, or in a high-end car. It was a lot of fun, but it didn’t really change my way of interpreting the role.

And that shows…

Being versatile is one of the qualities of an actor.

“Working on a more aggressive side wasn’t too difficult. The important thing was to add nuances, subtle changes in tone.”

In XO, Kitty, the “tough guy” side is still rather gentle. I’ve played mafia boss roles where I had to be much more ruthless with another “son.”

Philippe as a Mafia Boss, that’s something!

Where was it shot?

Everything was done in Busan, in the south of the peninsula. It’s the second-largest city in Korea, a major port, and a beautiful city.

This year, Mr. Moon is less visible. But we don’t really notice, as his interventions bring strong tension.

It’s true that this season, I only filmed three scenes, compared to seven episodes last year.

The focus is more on Min Ho’s character, your son on the show, who faces strong pressure from his father. How was this father-son relationship woven this year?

We didn’t work as much together, mainly because he was very busy this season…

Philippe Lee is of Korean origin and French nationality. He studied in Switzerland, near Montreux.

During the second season, you said, “Mr. Moon is almost me.” With the character’s abrupt development, what remains of that?

What’s funny is that it was still me. When I was lecturing Kitty, I could easily imagine a father tangling with a third party to protect his son. I’ve never had to yell at my children, but if I ever had to get angry and say, “That was your last chance,” I could do it. These are very accessible emotions.

Tension rises between Min Ho and his father.

This year again, Mr. Moon’s wardrobe is very fashionable. Is that your own signature?

No, the clothes are provided by the styling team. They are very attentive and always ask how I feel and if it reflects my character well. Sometimes we have very quick outfit changes.

Did these choices suit you?

Philippe Lee: Exactly, that’s the whole character! It helped me embody the eccentric magnate who owns his own boat and talks to everyone as if he were the king of the world.

Did the popularity of XO, Kitty change anything in your life? Are you recognized on the street?

Philippe Lee: Mr. Moon’s face has become much more popular, of course. If I accompany my daughter to a makeup store, for example, frequented by many young girls her age, I can be recognized and asked for selfies. I find it endearing to interact with young people who are the age of my children!

And professionally, have there been exciting propositions?

Philippe Lee: Naturally, casting directors are more aware of what I do. I have auditioned for important roles this year. I am waiting for the results!

How were your interactions with Anna Cathcart (Kitty’s actress)?

It’s always a great pleasure. She has real talent and has shown all facets of Kitty, from a child to an adult in school, and an adolescent experiencing first love. She also has an excellent memory, effortlessly recording new dialogues every day for three months! She is very promising.

Will there be a fourth season for Mr. Moon?

Philippe Lee: I don’t know yet, it’s a mystery. It depends on many parameters, including the show’s success, the platform’s schedule, current trends, etc.

If there is no sequel, where would you see yourself?

Philippe Lee: There are a few projects that I am passionate about, especially in Europe. I would love to film a French movie or series. Although my head is Korean, everything else about me is French, as that is the culture I grew up in. Ideally, it would be a French action movie. With my physique and international experience, I think I could convince them.
