This week, the 19th Made in Asia festival is taking place at the cinema in Tarascon, featuring the screening of two recent films. The goal? Introducing the audience to the cultures of today’s Asia, inviting them to immerse themselves in the colors of a whole continent, and explore what deeply shapes it: movement, transmission, and a profound connection to nature. The first film, “Ugly” (Friday at 8:30pm), is a thriller by the Korean Sang-Ho Yeon: a blind master craftsman known for the beauty of the seals he engraves lives in seclusion with his only son. But this peace shatters when the remains of his wife, missing for forty years, are discovered. His son then sets out to investigate, uncovering heavy secrets about human nature.
The second film will captivate many. With “Scarlet and Eternity,” Japanese director Mamoru Hosoda delivers a beautiful animated film on the themes of vengeance and forgiveness, an interesting interpretation of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Scarlet, a medieval princess skilled in combat, embarks on a perilous quest to avenge her father’s death. Along the way, she meets a young man from our era who not only helps her heal but also shows her that a world without bitterness or anger is possible.
