“Romeria” by Carla Simon will be competing in the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, released on April 8, 2026. (QUIM VIVES / ELASTICA FILMS)
The communal utopia and mental illness of a child by Camille Ponsin, the identity quest of a Spanish teenager directed by Carla Simon, and the work of Bernard-Marie Koltès adapted to cinema by Claire Simon with a bonus interview with Isaach de Bankolé… Here is the program for the cinema releases on Wednesday, April 8.
“The Cry of the Guards”: Isaach de Bankolé and Matt Dillon face off in a film reminiscent of an ancient tragedy directed by Claire Denis.
The director returns to Africa with a scorching thriller that depicts the struggles of a trio of expatriates confronted by a man seeking justice. With this new film, Claire Denis reunites with Isaach de Bankolé, their fourth collaboration, almost forty years after “Chocolat” (1988). By making this film, the filmmaker fulfills a promise made to playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès over 30 years ago, weeks before his death, to adapt his play “Combat de nègre et de chiens” for the screen.
“Savage”: A rural community tested by the madness of one of its children.
Documentarian Camille Ponsin directs his first fiction feature, plunging us into the wild nature of the Cévennes, a haven for utopians in the 1970s. Sam and Karl, along with their daughter Anja, live in a remote hamlet in the Cévennes. Anja, a mute teenager, gradually distances herself from the community, retreating into nature.
“Romeria”: The search for the origins of an orphan whose parents died of AIDS.
In her third film, Spanish director Carla Simon continues her autobiographical cinematic work by telling the story of the AIDS years from a family investigation perspective. Marina, the orphan, is now a young girl needing a document to secure a scholarship for her studies.
