Created in 1841, “Giselle” remains the perfect incarnation of romantic ballet, blending love, betrayal, and the supernatural. The story tells of the young peasant girl Giselle, hopelessly in love with Albrecht. When she discovers that he is engaged to an aristocrat, her world shatters. Broken by grief, she dies and joins the Wilis, vengeful spirits of betrayed young women, doomed to lure men into a fatal dance.
Making it accessible
Torn by guilt, Albrecht will come face these supernatural creatures on Giselle’s grave, in a poignant confrontation between love and redemption. Between technical virtuosity, purity of lines, and dramatic intensity, the work illustrates the beauty and expressive power of classical ballet. The Royal Opera House production in London sublimes this mythical work with its elegance, sensitivity, and the excellence of its performers.
