Florent Pagny Utilizes Secret Weapon on The Voice
In the latest season of The Voice, new rules are in place. The fifteenth edition of TF1’s popular singing contest resumed on Saturday, February 28th with a new round of “blind auditions.” A new feature this year is that each coach, in addition to the traditional “blocks,” has a “secret weapon” that they can only use once. This exclusive “joker” proved very useful to Florent Pagny, who didn’t fully understand the rule at first.
He had the power of the “boomerang” secret weapon. If one of his rivals blocked him, preventing him from courting a talent he had turned for, the veteran coach could then send the block back to its owner and try to convince the singer to join his team.
This power saved him after the audition of Lady O, an 18-year-old candidate from Switzerland who impressed three coaches with her rendition of Lana Del Rey’s Video Games. Amel Bent was the first to turn during the first chorus, quickly followed by Florent Pagny. Lara Fabian turned towards the end of the performance.
Confusion Amidst the Chair Shuffle
As soon as she saw the candidate, the Belgian-Canadian coach immediately used a “block” against Florent Pagny, causing his chair to turn away from the stage, preventing him from trying to convince Lady O to join him. That’s when he used his red buzzer to deploy his “secret weapon.”
His chair turned back towards the candidate, while Lara Fabian’s chair turned away from the stage. The coach realized she was blocked by her colleague. “Secret weapon? Secret weapon?” immediately asked Amel Bent while Tayc shouted in amazement. Poor Lady O, still on stage, seemed a bit confused by the chair shuffling.
Fortunately, Tayc came to her aid to explain that Florent Pagny had “counterblocked” Lara, so now she couldn’t court her. “It’s the boomerang, I’m returning what you did to me,” added Amel Bent.
“I Didn’t Realize I Was Blocking Her”
It was then that Florent Pagny confessed to not understanding the rule he had just used. “I thought I had the privilege to unblock myself, but I didn’t fully realize that I was unblocking myself and blocking her as well,” he admitted to the amused audience. “In fact, it’s fair, it’s well done, nature is well made,” he joked.
After this moment of uncertainty, Amel Bent and Florent Pagny battled to attract Lady O to their teams. “You have something that is out of this world,” praised the coach, while her colleague admired a candidate “who has much more maturity in her way of expressing herself than her young age might suggest.”
The argument seemed to work on the Swiss singer, who joined Florent Pagny’s team. “I don’t hold it against her,” Lara Fabian said, graciously, before adding: “But I think, what if I had this artist with me.”
