Meryem Benm’Barek, who won the screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 in the “Un certain regard” section with “Sofia,” a work that denounced the prohibition – except in extreme cases – of abortion in Morocco and more generally the position of women in the country. This new delivery follows the same line and takes place in a bright Tangier, then shady before becoming completely dark in the final scenes. A contemporary drama that uses thriller conventions, giving the impression of leaning towards romantic comedy.
The precise writing, combined with a desire to challenge the codes of the love triangle and to film characters hindered by laws, social environments, allows for the portrayal of three characters, among which Driss Ramdi’s revelation stands out. The actor is perfect as a man with a predestined life, caught by his desires, before showing cruelty. The sensory direction, between naturalism and romance – a balance that the filmmaker did not find in her first feature film – is evidence of a desire to play with contrasts. An ideal choice to infuse an atmosphere that is both gentle… and cruel when daring to look behind those famous palm trees.
