The animatronic Olaf, a new star of the “Frozen” attraction at Disneyland Paris, had a tough day on Monday, March 30th.
The snowman took a hit. The opening of a new attraction at Disneyland Paris based on “Frozen” attracted a crowd of fans to Marne-la-Vallée on Sunday, March 29th. While the public seemed to be impressed by the discovery of this new area of the Disney theme park (despite the endless wait), not everything is going as planned.
The cause? An adorable animatronic version of Olaf, the famous snowman companion of Elsa in the films, malfunctioned.
On the scale of its equivalent in “Frozen 1” and “2,” this animatronic, capable of interacting with the public and moving on its own in its dedicated park area, literally fell over in front of helpless spectators.
A video shared on TikTok by @magictourclub captured the exact moment Olaf suffered a malfunction. The video shows the small animatronic interacting with viewers before suddenly freezing in place and slowly toppling backward to the ground, losing its carrot nose in the process. Visitors, especially children, looked shocked and confused.
In the following sequence, a park employee appeared to check on the snowman before the technical team arrived to help upright the animatronic and reattach its carrot nose before removing it.
This scene is ironic for several reasons. Not only does Olaf’s fall seem to mimic his character in the “Frozen” films, but social media users have also been sharing humorous reactions to the incident.
Even low-cost airline Ryanair couldn’t resist joining in on the fun, poking gentle fun at passengers discovering the “bag sizer,” a device used to check if their luggage meets the required dimensions.
One internet user even joked, “Climate change claims a new victim,” inspired by the unfortunate event that occurred during the grand opening of the new Disneyland Paris area. This Olaf animatronic has been marketed for over a year as the next generation of autonomous characters in Disneyland parks to provide an even more immersive experience.
