On March 24 and 25, the University of Lorraine hosted an international symposium dedicated to the internationalization of higher education and research. Bringing together researchers and institutions from various regions of the world, this event allowed for an analysis of the contemporary dynamics of student and scientific mobility through a comparative approach between France, Japan, Morocco, and ASEAN countries.
An International Symposium to Rethink Mobility Dynamics
This international symposium aims to revisit the question of internationalization of higher education systems in connection with international student and scientific mobility, which are currently at the heart of state issues and new problematics. In an increasingly globalized context, international mobility in and out has significantly developed and now plays an increasingly important role within higher education and research systems worldwide. More than a recommendation, it has become an obligation advocated by national, European, and global bodies.
An Event Anchored in Long-standing Research
The symposium, organized by Yamina Bettahar, a lecturer in sociology and history of sciences and a member of the Archives Henri Poincaré (UMR 7117 at CNRS), took place at the University of Lorraine (March 24) and the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme et des Humanités Lorraine (March 25), with the support of various academic and scientific institutions.
This international symposium builds on the research conducted by Yamina Bettahar over the years at the Archives Poincaré laboratory, focusing on internationalization of higher education and scientific research in connection with student and researcher mobility, from a socio-historical, contemporary, and comparative perspective on the global stage. These works have led to research programs and publications financially supported by multiple entities.
International and Multidisciplinary Scientific Exchanges
In a globalized context, and in light of new indicators and dynamics shaping student and scientific mobility, the symposium brought together multidisciplinary researchers from various universities in France (Nice Côte d’Azur), Japan (Tohoku, Hiroshima, Tokyo), Morocco, and institutions such as the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.
National Attractiveness Policies and Strategies Questioned
French policymakers responsible for mobility issues have been promoting innovative policies in recent years to enhance international attractiveness. The symposium provided specialists with an opportunity to compare contexts, national specificities, challenges, and approaches to better guide state policies and ministries on crucial matters.
Themes at the Heart of Contemporary Scientific Debates
The symposium facilitated a reinterpretation of internationalization of higher education systems, attractiveness issues, student and scientific mobility, and presented recent research results against the backdrop of new geopolitical challenges. Various topics were explored, including academic and paradigmatic aspects, national contexts, national policies, and statistical analysis by Campus France.
The University of Lorraine: Committed to Internationalization
The symposium enriched discussions on internationalization of higher education and movements, allowing for reflection on global challenges. It also aligns with the university’s strategic international policy, historically fostering inbound and outbound mobility.
Strengthening International Academic Networks
The presence of academics from Japanese universities and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam will enhance academic relations in Asia, establish institutional collaborations, and serve as bridges between institutions.
In conclusion, this international symposium will contribute to enhancing scientific visibility and international reputations of the university through collaborations with Japan, Vietnam, and other partners, benefiting the entire university.
