TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) – A local family-owned company is conducting agricultural research year-round, using winter months to advance sustainable farming solutions.

Redox Bio-Nutrients, based in Burley, creates products to help with sustainable farming and continues operations despite colder temperatures.

Greenhouse extends research capabilities

Director of Research Gifford Gillette credits the company’s greenhouse for enabling continuous data collection.

“Because of the short growing season that we have out here in the West, we have a limited amount of time during that phase to collect data,” Gillette said. “And so we’re able to collect information not only during the winter, but we also have time frames across multiple protocols in place that allow us to accumulate a significant amount of information.”

The greenhouse allows the company to conduct an additional two to three dozen experiments each winter. Once data is collected from plants, it goes directly to the lab.

Data processing and analysis

“The first place that data goes, it goes to our research assistants, who are really important with Connor and Tori,” Gillette said. “And then it either goes to our scientists, our scientific staff, Dr. Das and myself, that put it into what we call a one-page redox result.”

The company focuses on finding practical solutions for farmers rather than just publishing papers.

“If what we’re doing doesn’t apply to the grower, then it’s meaningless,” Gillette said. “And so we call that applied science here at Redox.”

New laboratory facilities

The company has implemented its philosophy with a new state-of-the-art lab and specialized growing boxes. Gillette said they have been seeing positive results.

“We’ve done a really good job over the last three years, and we’ve been fortunate to be given the resources that we need to accomplish that and bridge that gap between research in a greenhouse versus what’s happening in the field,” Gillette said.
