This Sunday, March 22 around 8pm, we will know. We will know if Édouard Philippe can still be a candidate for the presidential election. We will know if the far right is taking over one or more of the four largest cities in France. We will also know if Rachida Dati has achieved the greatest challenge of her career or if the path that was open to her has turned into a dead end. In short, we will know who the winners and losers of the municipal elections are.
Long overshadowed by the budget debate and then hit by the death of Quentin Deranque and the war in Iran, the campaign (at least on a national level) took a long time to get started. But in March, it accelerated at the same time as it tensed up; as evidenced by the insults between Emmanuel Grégoire and Rachida Dati in Paris or the press conferences denouncing so-called “shameful agreements”.
In the past few days, unexpected alliances have emerged to win cities or try to save others. They have also confirmed tensions between left-wing political parties and highlighted the increasingly blurred lines between the right and the far right.
All of this will be analyzed by the political department of HuffPost during a live event organized this Monday, March 23 at 4:30 pm on our YouTube page. We invite you to join us to chat with our journalists and get your questions answered. In the meantime, check out all our articles on the municipal elections here and don’t forget to vote if you are in one of the 1555 municipalities where a second round is being held this Sunday.
