Former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, 72, known for taking a stand at the UN in 2003 as Minister of Foreign Affairs against the US war in Iraq, has been preparing for his comeback for several months.
During an appearance in Caen, he expressed his desire to be the “candidate of unity” in the first round of the 2027 presidential election without officially declaring his candidacy. He emphasized the need to “save” international law and interacted with attendees at the “Normandy for Peace” forum, including taking selfies with students and representatives from NGOs.
Villepin highlighted his governmental experience and expertise in international affairs to set himself apart from potential rivals. He criticized past leaders for lacking state and global experience and pointed out the dominance of two political parties, leaving a void in the political spectrum. Overall, he expressed enthusiasm for re-entering politics, meeting people, and listening to their concerns.
Voters are contemplating who could stand up to Trump in the Oval Office and the potential outcomes of a victory for Jordan Bardella or Marine Le Pen in the 2027 election, issues that have never arisen in the history of the Fifth Republic.
