Secretary national of the PCF, Fabien Roussel, rejected on Sunday on LCI the extended hand of LFI for the 2027 presidential election, estimating that there was “a break” with the party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who according to him is “the worst candidate for the second round.”

Responding to Manuel Bompard, Fabien Roussel explained that the latter made him “laugh” by “asking us to rally around his candidate, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, telling us: ‘We are willing to discuss the program and we will reach an agreement for the legislative elections’.” “We fall into the electoral stew,” regretted Fabien Roussel.

Under the last legislative agreement concluded with LFI in 2024 during the Nouveau Front populaire, “we fought to elect common candidates,” recalled the communist leader. But “these rebellious deputies for whom we fought ran against communist, socialist, and ecological mayors in the municipal elections,” he denounced, considering that “it leaves a somewhat bitter taste.”

Fabien Roussel added that the electoral setbacks suffered by the left in the municipal elections, “it’s because of them and it leaves a mark,” estimating that there was “a break.” “If it’s about discussing negotiations on common candidates, it’s not my priority. I don’t want it, I don’t believe in it,” he emphasized, personally believing that “Jean-Luc Mélenchon is certainly the worst candidate for the second round.”

When asked if there will be a communist candidate in the 2027 presidential election, Fabien Roussel replied “we’ll see,” as a PCF congress is planned for early July. Advancing “a counter-proposal” to Manuel Bompard’s, he invited “the left forces,” including LFI, to “work on the current oil shock.”

“Is the left capable of presenting strong measures as I am putting on the table today to regain control of energy policy, to block margins,” he emphasized, wishing to talk about “concrete measures for the French” and not about “negotiations.”
