With March Madness in full swing, many people are getting involved in sports betting on their favorite games. Colorado’s sports betting activity hit a new high in January, with the generated revenue being used to support water projects in the state.

Recently, a significant project was completed at the Lower North Fork Sediment Stabilization Project in Jefferson County. This area is susceptible to erosion due to its steep, rocky terrain and its proximity to the site of the 1996 Buffalo Creek Wildfire. The project aims to prevent sediment erosion by implementing anti-erosion measures like planting trees and seeding.

Margo Yousee from the Jefferson Conservation District emphasized the importance of sports betting revenue in initiating and funding this project. By protecting the watershed in the hills, the project ensures cleaner and healthier water downstream for everyone to benefit from.

Colorado’s sports betting industry broke a revenue record in January, contributing over $5 million in tax revenue. Christopher Schroder, the Colorado Division of Gaming Director, highlighted the positive impact of this revenue on funding crucial water projects, with over $104 million raised since 2019.

The revenue from sports betting also supports the Colorado Water Plan Grant Program, where local communities can propose projects to address water challenges and enhance resiliency. Projects related to agriculture and land use planning have been funded through this program.

Jeannine Shaw from the Colorado Conservation Board praised the project’s efforts in building resilient watersheds and addressing various environmental challenges like fire, flood, and drought. Shaw noted the high demand for funding, with $37 million awarded in the last fiscal year alone.

The commitment to sustainable water management and environmental protection is evident in the collaboration between sports betting revenue and water conservation efforts in Colorado.
