Iran War May End Era of F

The iconic F-14 fighter jet, made famous by the movie “Top Gun,” is facing potential extinction due to the conflict in Iran. Reports from NPR and the War Zone suggest that Israeli airstrikes may have destroyed the last remaining operational F-14s. Satellite images reveal multiple destroyed Tomcats at an Iranian airbase, leaving uncertainty about any potential survivors. If all the F-14s are indeed gone, it would mark the end of a saga that began in the 1970s when the US sold these advanced aircraft to Iran, only for them to fall into the hands of an anti-US regime after the shah’s overthrow.

US Navy Cmdr. Ward Carroll, a former F-14 pilot, expressed a mix of understanding and sadness over the destruction of the jets. He believes that all the F-14s in Iran have been destroyed, with estimates of operational aircraft ranging from a handful to 25. Iran has reportedly resorted to a “long-running spare parts smuggling ring” to keep these aging aircraft in the air.
