President Donald Trump is proposing a budget with the highest-ever U.S. military spending and increased funding for domestic immigration agents. The budget will significantly cut spending on social services, environmental efforts, scientific research, and children’s programs.

Out of a $2.2 trillion budget, $1.5 trillion is set to go towards national defense, representing a 42% increase. Trump emphasized the need for military protection over other individual services. Additionally, the budget allocates $10 billion to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and $18.5 billion to Customs and Border Protection.

This budget request comes amid a war launched against Iran by the U.S. and Israel without Congressional or U.N. approval. Democratic leaders are calling for an immediate end to the war, with some suggesting invoking the 25th amendment to remove Trump from office.

Trump’s budget proposal also includes additional funding for immigrant detention facilities and the construction of more sites. The plan cancels $20 billion in previously approved infrastructure funding and eliminates various programs and agencies, including LIHEAP and the Minority Business Development Agency.

Overall, the budget has faced criticism from watchdog groups and lawmakers who argue against the prioritization of military spending over social programs. Congress will ultimately decide on the budget for the next fiscal year.
