WDSU’s coverage of a heroic rescue during Hurricane Francine has received a nomination for a National Emmy award. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognized WDSU in the category of Outstanding Regional News Story: Breaking Spot News. Former WDSU reporter Jonah Gilmore and WDSU photojournalist Matthew Deemester captured the live television coverage of the dramatic rescue on September 11, 2024.

The incident took place at the Canal Street Underpass in New Orleans, where a driver became trapped in a fully submerged pickup truck after ignoring barricades and driving into dangerous floodwaters caused by Hurricane Francine. During a live broadcast, Gilmore and Deemester witnessed the truck sinking and quickly alerted a nearby police officer.

A courageous Good Samaritan named Miles Crawford was also present at the scene. When he realized what was happening, Crawford rushed back to his home, retrieved a tool to break the truck window, and successfully rescued the trapped individual from the vehicle. The winners of this category will be announced on May 27.

The nomination recognizes the impactful journalism and bravery displayed by the WDSU team and Miles Crawford during the intense rescue operation.
