Raymond, N.H. – The suspect accused of shooting a police officer in Raymond after opening fire on his family has been killed by police. State Police reported that officers encountered the suspect, 38-year-old Matthew Masse, in a wooded area around 10:06 p.m. on Saturday night after the community near Ham Road had been in a shelter-in-place order for hours. There was an exchange of gunfire between Masse and the police when they tried to apprehend him, leading to his death. An autopsy is scheduled for early this week, according to the Attorney General.
Law enforcement responded to a call at a home on Ham Road after reports that Masse was shooting at his family members on Saturday around 1:30 p.m. Masse also fired at officers during this encounter, injuring a veteran police officer from the Nottingham Police Department. The officer’s injuries are not life-threatening. After the shooting, Masse fled into a wooded area, prompting law enforcement to establish a perimeter. Residents in the area were instructed to shelter in place, keep doors locked, and avoid the area.
Authorities were aware of Masse since Thursday, and he has active felony warrants. The suspect’s mother revealed that Masse suffers from severe mental health issues. She stated that the incident began on Saturday afternoon when family members went to the suspect’s home and he fired at them with a high-powered rifle, causing no injuries. Additionally, the suspect’s mother mentioned a suspicious fire at her home on Thursday.
