The President of the Culture Committee of the National Assembly, Alexandre Portier, provided an update on Thursday, February 19, on the work of the investigative committee launched after the Louvre theft.

The Louvre has “become a state within the state” and the Ministry of Culture must “take control” to address the “chain of malfunctions” that allowed the robbery on October 19, declared the President of the inquiry commission on museum security on Thursday, February 19.

“What is striking is to see that the Louvre has become a state within the state,” said LR deputy Alexandre Portier, assessing the progress of his commission’s work.

“Our convictions, at this stage, are very clear, that supervision, the Ministry of Culture, must take control,” he added, ensuring that “the management of the Louvre was currently failing.”

Rachida Dati and the President of the Louvre to be heard next week

The Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, and the President of the Louvre, Laurence des Cars, will be heard next week by the investigative committee of the National Assembly on museum security, as announced by its president on Thursday during a press conference.

Asked about the continuation of Ms. des Cars in office, who will be heard on Wednesday, LR deputy Alexandre Portier believed that the “list of deficiencies” identified at the Louvre after the theft on October 19 “would have led in many countries and institutions to a resignation long ago.”

Heard on Monday afternoon, Rachida Dati, who is expected to leave the government, will have to explain in particular the “real drift of public authorities” in the management of the world’s most visited museum, added the President, alongside the rapporteur of the commission, MP Alexis Corbière (ex-LFI).
