CULTURE FOOD. Why French Tacos has become Toulousians favorite culinary aberration

The “French Tacos” has become a pillar of fast food in France. While its social analysis is interesting, it remains a symbol of global junk food.

Born in the 2000s between Lyon suburbs and Grenoble, the French tacos concept is simple: a large wheat cake filled with meats, fries, cheese, and various sauces, then grilled to form the sandwich we all know. It is worth noting, however, that it has nothing to do with its American counterpart and resembles more, aesthetically, a burrito than a true taco.

A symbol of popular neighborhoods

The “French Tacos” represents a contemporary urban culture, at the crossroads of identities, a cheesy sauce with kebab meat and samurai sauce moisten the cordon bleu. On TikTok and other social networks, specialized brands put on a show, collaborating with rappers or DJ stars, even appearing in their music videos. The O’tacos brand even made a video on Jul’s favorite recipe, showing its popularity.

A culinary heresy in the land of gastronomy

In comparison, McDonald’s almost seems saintly when looking at this ultra-caloric “fourzitou”, found in the land of the mère Brazier and Paul Bocuse. Fries turned into puree by a thick cheesy sauce, other flavors that are industrial and saturated, cordon bleu, kebab meat, and maybe even some cheese donuts, all wrapped in a cheddar-covered cake that slowly gratinates in the oven. It is hard to put into words the mouthfeel: pasty? Salty, sweet, disgusting! And yet, it has become an essential part of today’s culinary landscape.
