In charge of culture within the Dracé&nie Provence Verdon agglomération, Nathalie Perez, mayor of La Roque-Esclapon, works towards providing access to culture for everyone in the region. While actions have been taken in recent years, there are areas that still need improvement.
What does culture bring to a region? It’s about open-mindedness, knowledge, taking time for relaxation, and creating social connections in villages.
What are the latest actions implemented in Dracé&nie? The Mediabus is one example. We are also working on artistic and cultural education in schools and middle schools. For instance, there is an orchestra at Taradeau school where children have a real approach to music and can perform. We have also worked on inventorying heritage, in partnership with the Region.
Are there still areas for improvement? Bringing culture to people is positive, but introducing a child to a theater or museum is also important. The main issue remains mobility. Providing access to culture when it is focused in the city center of a region is challenging. A specially adapted shuttle service could be a possible solution.
Can culture reach all audiences? Culture needs to be taken out of elitist systems. Everyone has the right to be uplifted. Currently, 90% of the events proposed by DPVa are free.
Additionally, we are also focusing on the connection between culture and mental health. Removing a young person from addiction to series and social media is a priority. Investing in sports and culture is an investment in the future.
