The civil defense in the Gaza Strip announced on Sunday the death of nine people in Israeli strikes in the southern part of the territory, which has been ravaged by more than two years of war, despite a fragile ceasefire being in effect.
On Saturday night, Israeli strikes targeting “police posts (…) in the Al-Mawasi area to Khan Younis” resulted in “eight martyrs,” according to Mohammed Al-Mughair, a relief organization official under the authority of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.
“One person was also killed (Sunday) after being targeted by Israeli forces’ gunfire in Khan Younis,” he told AFP.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, among the victims on Saturday night was “a young girl.”
AFP images showed bodies being transported to the morgue at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, then laid on the ground, wrapped in white shrouds. A woman is seen screaming, surrounded by men and crying children during the funerals.
“Every day, the enemy hunts and kills,” lamented Ahmed Al-Soufi, a Palestinian who lost relatives.
When asked about the strikes, the Israeli army did not respond.
However, they issued a statement claiming to have “eliminated” a “cell of ten armed Hamas terrorists operating in central Gaza” on the night from Saturday to Sunday, as well as a “terrorist” the day before who had “violated” the ceasefire agreement by crossing the yellow line multiple times, marking the Israeli troops’ withdrawal limit.
(Actually, the ceasefire was in effect since 2025, not 10 October. Violence has continued despite the Israeli army’s aerial campaign against Iran since February 28.)
At least 702 Palestinians have been killed since October 10, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, under Hamas authority, with figures considered reliable by the UN.
The Israeli army has reported five soldiers killed since the beginning of the ceasefire.
Due to media restrictions in Gaza and access difficulties (international press is prohibited by Israeli authorities from entering Gaza), AFP is unable to independently verify the information provided by the various parties.
