Between natural heritage and archaeological treasure, the Foissac caves offer a fascinating dive into prehistory. Occupied more than 5,000 years ago and then remaining sealed for millennia, this exceptional site in Aveyron reveals unique remains and allows visitors to discover an underground world that is as spectacular as it is informative.
The Foissac caves are one of the most important prehistoric sites in Aveyron. 5,000 years ago, at the end of the Neolithic period, men from the “Chalcolithic”, the beginning of the copper period, returned to these caves. They invested in them, developed them, they lived there. Shortly after their passage, landslides occurred and completely blocked the entrance, putting a real seal on these places.
Discovered in 1959 by speleologists, it quickly revealed real archaeological treasures, hidden underground for thousands of years. Archaeologists have discovered exceptionally well-preserved pottery, tools, jewelry and human bones in the caves.
The caves are today known for housing prehistoric skeletons left in their original location, a rare discovery in France. The site also has prehistoric engravings made on the walls. Thanks to these remains, scientists have been able to better understand the life of the populations who occupied the territory several millennia ago.
A visit between nature and prehistory
Open to the public since 1973, the caves can be visited during a guided tour lasting approximately one hour. From the entrance, visitors are immersed in an impressive universe, made of underground rooms, stalactites, draperies and concretions formed over time by water and limestone. An underground river, the Jonquière, accompanies part of the visit.
Throughout the route, the guides explain the history of the caves, the archaeological discoveries and the natural formation of the galleries. The cool and constant temperature (12°C) allows you to enjoy a pleasant visit. The caves are accessible to a wide public and attract more than 20,000 visitors each year curious to discover this unique underground heritage.
The discovery continues outside with the prehistory museum. This space presents the objects found in the cave and retraces the work of archaeologists. Explanatory panels, models and reconstructions provide a better understanding of the daily life of prehistoric men and the excavations carried out. Between historical discovery, underground adventure and natural heritage, the Foissac caves offer an ideal outing for the summer.
