A key artist on the French scene for more than three decades, Patrick Bruel is a figure who has long embodied popularity and closeness with the public. Acclaimed for his songs, appreciated for his media presence, it has also distinguished itself through strong societal commitments. Among these, his notable participation in the campaign“Put on red! alongside personalities like Patrick Poivre d’Arvor, aimed to mobilize male opinion against violence against women. Yet, the retrospective on this commitment today takes on a very particular dimension, while the artist now faces a vague charges.

Since spring 2026, Patrick Bruel is in fact the target of an investigation opened after complaints for sexual violence and sexist. According to Mediapart, nearly thirty women accuse him of alleged acts spanning from 1991 to 2019; among them, journalist Flavie Flament notably filed a complaint for rape, denouncing an attack that occurred when she was 16 years old. In parallel with these revelations, justice placed the artist in custody then under control judicial, with several measures imposed taking into account the seriousness of the alleged facts. Between public commitment and judicial news, the trajectory of Patrick Bruel questions as much as it provokes reactions.
Patrick Bruel, symbol committed to the campaign “Put on red!†against violence against women
In 2014, during International Women’s Day, the “Put on red!†campaign made an impression. Its principle ? Encourage men to post a photo of themselves with red lipstick accompanied by a promise… “I’m a man. If a woman is attacked in front of me, I undertake to defend him.†Behind this action, both playful and symbolic, the stated desire to give a central place to male commitment in the fight against violence against women. Patrick Bruel joined the initiative, just like famous faces from culture and media: Jacques Dutronc, Vincent Cassel, André Dussollier, David Pujadas, Benjamin Biolay, Michel Cymes or even Patrick Poivre d’Arvor.
This movement, driven by Alice Lepers, intended to recall a chilling figure : “250 women are raped every day in France according to the Delinquency Observatory… . An observation which, for the creator of the campaign, underlined the vital need to publicly involve men in the fight: “Discovering this terrible figure, I wondered when my turn would come. With an action that is both symbolic and playful, I wanted to mobilize men who until now had not been heard too much about violence against women.†(Alice Lepers)..

In hindsight, the presence of male figures today caught up in cases of violence or sexual assault – such as Patrick Bruel or Patrick Poivre d’Arvor – offers a critical reading on the scope and sincerity of their mediatized commitment in 2014.

Bruel : the fall of an icon ?†broadcast on BFMTV, detailing a situation deemed particularly worrying: “He grabs my wrist and pulls me into the toilet which he locks. He leans me against the door, so I don’t know how to open it. There again , he tries to kiss me, his lips on my neck, her hands caressing my legs and going up under my dress to pass them under my tights.†(Karine Viseur, BFMTV).
Faced with the scale of the file, justice has put in place striking judicial control measures: handing over his passport, ban on leaving the territory, obligation of psychological monitoring and deposit of 500 000 euros, as well as a strict ban on approaching the complainants and their relatives. The different procedures are grouped together at the Nanterre public prosecutor’s office, several past cases having been relaunched in light of new testimony.

The Patrick Bruel case illustrates the complexity of the debate around the public commitments of personalities confronted with serious accusations, a dynamic very present in the current media and societal landscape.
