The American President, Donald Trump, signed the agreement with Iran from the Château de Versailles to end the war in the Middle East, franceinfo learned at the Elysée on Wednesday June 17, confirming information from the American site Axios. A paper copy of the agreement was signed, then a photograph was sent to the Iranian authorities, specifies the French presidency to franceinfo.
“I can confirm the signature”also declared an American official to AFP, questioned about the information according to which the leader of the United States had personally signed a copy of the agreement during a dinner at the Château de Versailles, with the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron at the end of the G7 summit. A White House official subsequently published a video on X where we see the Republican initialing the agreement alongside his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.
For its part, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed the signing of the agreement with Washington on Wednesday evening. “The text of the Islamabad MoU was finalized by the signature of the Presidents [Donald Trump et Massoud Pezeshkian]. Now is the time to put the implementation of this agreement to the test.”declared the ministry’s spokesperson, Esmaïl Baghaï, quoted by the Irna agency. For the head of the Iranian negotiating team, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, this agreement “demonstrates the failure of the United States”a-t-il déclaré à la télévision d’Etat.
The memorandum of understanding “will enter into force with immediate effect and, as a first step, the Islamic Republic of Iran will promptly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States of America will immediately lift the naval blockade“, wrote on X the Pakistani Prime Minister, Shebaz Sharif, one of the mediators between the two countries.
The strait “will not return to the pre-war situation”, however declared Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in an interview broadcast late Wednesday evening by state television. “Iran has a right of sovereignty over Hormuz and, of course, we will collect a fee for these services”he added.
Under the terms of the text made public by the American authorities, Tehran undertakes in particular to dilute its stocks of highly enriched uranium, under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and this within the framework of two-month negotiations following the signing of the protocol. Washington is committed to facilitating the establishment of a fund of 300 billion dollars for the reconstruction and development of Iran in the event of a final agreement. Furthermore, Iran would also be authorized to resume its oil sales upon signing the protocol, and all sanctions would be lifted in the event of a final agreement following subsequent negotiations.
The agreement signed in the evening also includes a section dealing with the Lebanese front. The leader of pro-Iranian Hezbollah, Naïm Qassem, spoke overnight, calling the texte “great victory” from Iran. He called for “take advantage” pour “expel Israel” of Lebanese territory.
