The B-21 Raider, a future American stealth bomber planned for 2027, is designed to replace the aging B-2 and B-1 bombers, carry out high-risk nuclear or conventional missions (with or without a pilot), and play a central role in the United States military strategy, despite doubts about its vulnerabilities and insufficient numbers compared to China.

It is expected to be operational by 2027. The sixth-generation B-21 Raider nuclear bomber is set to take over from two strategic American bombers: the B-2, in service since the 1990s and bearing a strong resemblance to it, and the B-1 Lancer, a very fast bomber capable of flying at Mach 2 and in service since the 1970s.

The B-21 Raider is a new-generation stealth strategic bomber developed from the 2010s by Northrop Grumman for the US Air Force. Officially unveiled in 2022 and entering testing phase in the mid-2020s, it is part of a program aimed at modernizing the long-range strike capability of the United States. Designed to be extremely discreet, it can carry conventional and nuclear weapons, adapt to future technological developments, and has an estimated unit cost of approximately $700-800 million (in present value).

Most importantly, it is equipped with autonomous functions. The B-21 Raider is designed to eventually operate without a crew, allowing it to carry out particularly risky missions without risking pilots, such as deep strikes in heavily defended areas, reconnaissance operations, or electronic warfare. Additionally, it is not limited to a typical bomber role. Integrated into advanced networks like the Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2), it can collect and share real-time information, coordinate the actions of other aircraft or drones, and act as a true flying command center.

Context: The B-21 Raider is part of the US Air Force’s efforts to modernize its military capabilities.

Fact Check: The B-21 Raider is designed to eventually operate without a crew, enhancing its versatility and mission capabilities.

Vulnerabilities identified by China

Earlier this month, a video captured by an aviation enthusiast shows a B-21 being refueled by a KC-135 with an accompanying F-16. A sign that the aircraft is now ready to take flight.

The stealth bomber B-21 Raider, the flagship of the future American Air Force, has attracted significant attention from China. According to defense analyst Harry J. Kazianis, cited by the site 19fortyfive, Chinese researchers believe they have identified potential vulnerabilities in its design, particularly in terms of aerodynamics and radar signature. If these assessments are accurate, they could undermine a central pillar of American strategy in the Indo-Pacific region.

Despite the secrecy surrounding the program – classified specifications, controlled communication – stealth is subject to universal physical laws. China has the scientific and industrial capabilities to test its limits. In this context, Chinese assertions cannot be dismissed as mere propaganda; they are part of a credible technical approach, even though their exact impact remains uncertain.

Chinese researchers highlight two potential weaknesses. Firstly, the radar signature depends on the observation angle: certain configurations could expose the aircraft to next-generation radars. Secondly, the thermal signature, detectable by emerging infrared systems. These sensors, independent of radar, could provide tracking capabilities for stealth aircraft, reducing their operational advantage.

These concerns become even more critical in light of a report from the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. The authors believe that even advanced platforms like the B-21 will only be effective if deployed in sufficient numbers. However, the currently planned volumes are deemed inadequate for a high-intensity conflict with China.

Context: China’s research identifying potential vulnerabilities in the B-21 Raider’s design raises concerns about its effectiveness in strategic scenarios.

Fact Check: Chinese analysts have raised concerns about the B-21 Raider’s vulnerabilities, particularly in radar and thermal signatures.

Production of 200 B-21 and 300 F-47

A report cited by Business Insider explains that China’s geographical position, combined with its A2/AD defense systems, allows it to establish highly protected zones from which it can effectively attack its adversaries. In this scenario, modern aircraft like the B-21 Raider and the future F-47 fighter are capable of surviving enemy defenses, but they are not numerous enough to carry out sufficient missions and quickly destroy Chinese positions. Experts therefore recommend producing many more: about 200 B-21 and 300 F-47.

The urgency of the situation is compounded by the fact that these new aircraft will not be available in significant numbers for several years. In the meantime, the US Air Force must rely on older platforms like the B-52, B-1, or B-2, which are less suited to highly contested environments. Furthermore, several evaluations indicate that the American fleet available today is at its lowest in decades.

In this context, recommendations include not only a massive increase in budgets – up to an additional $40 billion per year – but also the development of complementary systems like “loyal wingman” drones, unmanned aircraft designed to accompany piloted planes.
