INTERVIEW – For the Estonian Defense Minister, Europeans must invest massively in their defense to dissuade Russia from militarily testing the Atlantic Alliance.

The Estonian Defense Minister, Hanno Pevkur, was present in Paris for the Eurosatory arms fair.

LE FIGARO. – Some people fear today that Russia will try to “test” Europe before 2030. Do you share this concern?

HANNO PEVKUR. – Let’s look at history. Over the last hundred years, Russia has launched, depending on how you define it, between fourteen and seventeen military conflicts or wars. Over the past thirty years, it has started five wars. Every six or seven years, it starts a war. This pattern can always change… Unfortunately, history shows that Russia is hostile. The only option for Europe to avoid war is to show its strength. So 2027, 2028, 2029 or 2030, that’s not the question. We must send a very clear message to Russia that if it makes a mistake in its calculation and if it launches military action against Europe or against NATO, it will be exposed to an immediate response…
