Atlantist and eurosceptic in substance, combative and committed in form, it is the conservative journal of reference. Founded in 1855, as its title pays tribute to a then revolutionary communication technology, it is the last of the national broadsheet dailies to have not abandoned the large format.
Owned until the beginning of 2004 by press magnate Conrad Black, the title was then acquired by billionaire brothers David and Frederick Barclay. In 2023, amidst financial turmoil, the newspaper was seized by the Barclay family’s creditors, who went in search of a new owner, along with The Sunday Telegraph, grouped within the Telegraph Media Group Holdings Ltd. After three years of twists and turns, the sales process, widely reported in the UK, resulted in an acquisition at the beginning of 2026 by the German Axel Springer (Die Welt, Bild, Politico) for a whopping 660 million euros.
Its schedule is very busy, notably due to the Court Circular, which details the daily activities of the royal family. Another eagerly awaited feature is the small cartoon by Matt, always elegant and funny, published on the front page.
