Vladimir Putin receives Asian leaders for a parallel summit at the G7
While the G7 leaders meet, Vladimir Putin also welcomes several Asian officials to Kazan, in central Russia, as part of a two-day summit. This meeting marks the 35th anniversary of relations between Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). According to the Kremlin, representatives of the organization’s eleven member states, including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, are participating in the event.
A welcoming ceremony is planned for today, before the main discussions scheduled for Thursday. The discussions must focus on major international and regional issues, but also on the results of cooperation between Moscow and Asean. Participants will also examine new perspectives for collaboration in the political, security, trade and investment areas. Since the launch of the Russian offensive against Ukraine in February 2022 and the adoption of massive Western sanctions, Russia has turned more towards Asian markets, in particular to sell its energy exports. Before his arrival in Kazan, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim indicated that his discussions with the Russian president would notably include the question of the continuity of Malaysia’s supplies of Russian oil.
The shots from the Russian frigate “were aimed at preventing a possible collision”, according to the British Ministry of Defense
The Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots in the direction of a “sailing yacht” named “Bright Future” and sailing under the British flag in the Channel because the latter was approaching “dangerously” from this warship, Moscow said. “To attract the attention of the yacht’s crew, flares and sound signals were launched.
“These were not directed against the ship and were aimed at preventing a possible collision,” explained in the evening the British Defense Ministry, which had previously said it was investigating “into reports of an incident in the Channel”. According to the ministry, this is an ‘isolated’ incident, unrelated to the interception on Sunday by British commandos of an oil tanker suspected of being part of the Russian ghost fleet in the same area of the Channel.
G7 leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine after the summit
