The announcement came from Tehran. On the night of Sunday June 14 to Monday June 15, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi detailed the main commitments contained in the memorandum of understanding concluded with the United States.

According to the Iranian diplomat, the text first provides for “the immediate and definitive end of the war and military operations on the various fronts”, including in Lebanon. This declaration marks the first official presentation of the content of the agreement by the Iranian authorities. These negotiations will focus on four areas: the lifting of sanctions, nuclear power, the reconstruction and economic development of Iran, as well as a mechanism for monitoring commitments.

UN chief Antonio Guterres welcomed a “crucial step” towards a peaceful settlement of the Middle East conflict. In a press release, he also thanked several countries that participated in the mediation efforts, notably Pakistan.

From son côté, Emmanuel Macron a exprimé sur X “salue[r] the agreement concluded between the United States and Iran, the result of a diplomatic effort to which several partners contributed. I call for its rapid and complete implementation by all belligerents.”

This agreement must allow urgent and unconditional reopening…

An official signing expected on June 19 in Geneva

If the memorandum of understanding has already been announced as concluded, its official signature must still take place. According to the Pakistani mediator cited by several stakeholders, the ceremony is scheduled for Friday June 19 in Geneva, Switzerland.

US Vice President JD Vance indicated on Fox News that he planned to attend this event. He also suggested that American President Donald Trump could also be present.

This signature must constitute the starting point of a broader diplomatic process. Kazem Gharibabadi specified that new discussions would open within sixty days in order to reach a final agreement. However, he stressed that “distrust remained” between Tehran and Washington despite this progress.

The Strait of Hormuz at the heart of the discussions

One of the main issues of the agreement concerns the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage through which a significant part of the world’s oil passes, blocked since February 28. A little more than 800 stagnating in the waters of the strait, compared to 3,000 at the start of the war. For several weeks now, the Iranians have been charging what they call service fees, which is why a certain number of boats are circulating sparsely, no more than ten per day. For comparison, there were around 140 ships crossing this strait every day before the war.

Sunday evening, Donald Trump affirmed that this sea route would reopen as of the signing of the agreement, scheduled for June 19. According to him, this reopening will allow mine clearance operations and the normal resumption of oil traffic in the region.

This statement, however, seems to qualify certain previous announcements by the American president, who had mentioned an immediate reopening of the strait as well as a rapid lifting of the American naval blockade. For its part, the main Iranian press agency spoke of a reopening regulated by Iran, a novelty compared to the pre-war situation.

The sustainable return to service of this maritime route constitutes one of the central elements of the return to regional stability and the re-establishment of international energy exchanges.

The G7 wants to secure the reopening of the strait in the long term

Meeting in Évian from this Monday, June 15, the G7 leaders must devote part of their discussions to the consequences of the agreement.

Upon his arrival on the shores of Lake Geneva, French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that discussions would focus in particular on “the long-term reopening of Hormuz”, support for Lebanon as well as the prospect of a future agreement on nuclear power and Iranian ballistic missiles.

The French head of state welcomes Donald Trump for three days as well as the leaders of Germany, Canada, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom. The stated objective is to transform the ceasefire agreement into a lasting political settlement.

Les marchés pétroliers réagissent immédiatement

The announcement of this agreement caused a rapid reaction on the energy markets.

During the first Asian trades this Monday morning, oil prices fell significantly. The price of Brent North Sea oil lost around 4% to $83.84 per barrel, while the price of US WTI oil fell more than 4.5% to $81.05.

At the same time, Asian stock markets rebounded strongly, with Tokyo gaining more than 4% and Seoul more than 5%. At the beginning of March, the barrel of oil had soared by 30% and exceeded 115 dollars.
