Accused of behaving like a monarch, this decision will not silence critics. After having a coin minted in his likeness, Donald Trump will now include his signature on future American banknotes, the Treasury announced on Thursday, March 26, a first for a sitting U.S. president.
The first $100 bills featuring the new signature will be printed in June. It will then be extended to other denominations, according to the government statement.
Since 1861, only the signature of the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and the Treasurer of the United States appeared on greenbacks. “There is no more powerful way to recognize the historical achievements of our great country and President Donald Trump than with dollar bills bearing his name,” justified Finance Minister Scott Bessent, quoted in the statement.
Son empreinte partout
This announcement is part of a series of decisions aimed at affixing Donald Trump’s imprint on many buildings or symbols of the United States, arousing accusations of personality cult.
On March 19, a federal fine arts commission – all members of which were appointed by Donald Trump – gave the green light to mint a gold commemorative coin with the president’s effigy.
Several public buildings have already been renamed in the republican’s name since his return to the White House last year, such as the Kennedy Center, a renowned cultural institution in Washington.
And in Florida, Palm Beach International Airport is also set to change its name to Donald Trump, under a law passed by lawmakers in this southeastern state, where his private residence is located.
