Throughout the year, 24/7, the AAE ensures the protection of the national territory through the permanent air safety posture (PPSA). This mission aims to combat threats from the air and/or assist aircraft in difficulty (such as loss of communication means or bad weather conditions). During major events, such as the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games or the inaugural launch of the European Ariane 6 rocket, this posture is strengthened. The AAE, through its Air Defense and Air Operations Command (CDAOA), deploys protection bubbles (called DPSA).
On March 28, 2026, at the request of the Monégasque government and in accordance with the Franco-Monegasque treaty of October 24, 2002, French forces will ensure the security of Pope Leon XIV’s visit. Several aircraft will be deployed: Rafale fighter jet, Fennec helicopter, E3-F AWACS radar aircraft, and A330 MRTT Phoenix refueler. This reinforcement of detection and intervention means temporarily bans any aircraft penetration in a specific area. This DPSA will be monitored from Lyon-Mont Verdun Air Base 942, housing the CDAOA and its Air Operations Planning and Control Center (CAPCODA).
Context: AAE (Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace) is the French Air and Space Force responsible for air defense and air operations.
Fact Check: The protection bubbles (DPSA) mentioned in the article refer to the deployment of air defense mechanisms during specific events or visits to safeguard against aerial threats.
