The funeral of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei, killed by Israeli-American strikes on the first day of the war on February 28, was “postponed” to the end of June or the beginning of July, the mayor of Tehran, Alireza Zakani. The national funeral will now take place between June 26 and July 5 of the month of “Muharram” of the Muslim calendar, estimates the mayor, quoted by the Iranian agency Fars.

Ali Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for nearly 37 years, died at age 86 during the bombing of his residence in central Tehran. A national funeral initially planned for March 4 was postponed due to the war.

Iran had recently mentioned mid-June for a national funeral to last three days in Tehran, as well as in the holy cities of Qom and Mashhad where Khamenei will be buried. Ali Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, succeeded him at the beginning of March but he has not appeared in public since: injured in a strike, he expresses himself only via written messages.
