Florian Gillet was 21 years old. The soldier died in the service of France on Wednesday June 10 in Lebanon. The French authorities salute his memory. “Deeply saddened by the accidental death of first class paratrooper porpoise Florian Gilet, my thoughts are with his family, his loved ones and his brothers in arms”, a partagé Catherine Vautrin, the Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans, said:

A military instructor as part of a partnership with the Lebanese army, he arrived in the Pays du Cédre on June 1st. Based in the town of Saluyeh to train soldiers, he was hit by an accidental shot according to the army. An investigation will determine the circumstances of the tragedy. Originally from the Ain department, the first class soldier belonged to the 8th Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment.

In Castres in the evening, sadness dominates. “That our young people are going to be killed like this, for families like us, it’s terrible. I have enormous emotion because really, it’s a real shame“, saddened a woman. “It’s really a regiment that is intertwined in the city. And every time there is an event like this, it affects everyone,” says a man.

Florian Gillet is the fourth French soldier to die in the Middle East since the start of the war on February 28. Last April, Anicet Girardin and Florian Montorio, two soldiers attached to UNIFIL, the UN force, were killed in Lebanon. Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion was killed in Iraq in an attack attributed to Hezbollah.
