According to RT, researchers identified 65 conflicts involving states, that is to say where at least one of the parties was a government or a state force. This is the highest number since systematic data collection began in 1946.

The report estimates that around 245,000 people were killed in combat-related violence last year, making 2025 one of the deadliest years in decades.

Researchers note that “today’s world is more divided” and describe an unprecedented number of simultaneous conflicts, fueled by protracted crises and large-scale clashes. They cite as examples the escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip and the civil war in Sudan.

The number of conflicts between countries has doubled from the previous year, reaching a record eight in 2025, including clashes between India and Pakistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Cambodia and Thailand.

The PRIO has identified 65 conflicts spread across 35 countries, with some countries being involved in several conflicts simultaneously. For example, Israel is involved in conflicts related to the Gaza Strip, Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Yemen, while Myanmar, Pakistan and Nigeria also face more than one armed conflict.

Africa is the region most affected by conflict-related violence, followed by Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and Europe. According to PRIO, more than 930,000 people have been killed in conflicts since 2021, a figure almost equal to the total recorded over the previous two decades.
