Bolivia suspends recognition of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

Bolivia has announced the suspension of its recognition of the entity known as the “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (RASD), marking a significant turning point in its foreign policy. This position was made public following a telephone conversation between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Bolivian counterpart, Fernando Aramayo.

According to the joint statement, the Plurinational State of Bolivia conducted a “sovereign reexamination” of its foreign policy, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025) and reaffirming its support for the political process under the auspices of the United Nations.

Suspension of relations with the RASD

Following this evaluation, La Paz has decided to suspend its diplomatic relations with the RASD and to end all official contact with this entity. The statement emphasizes that the RASD is “not recognized as a member state of the United Nations.” Bolivian authorities explain that this decision aims to contribute “constructively” to international efforts to achieve a political solution that is “realistic, pragmatic, and sustainable,” based on compromise and in line with UN parameters.

A new chapter with Morocco

This diplomatic evolution opens a new phase in relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and Bolivia. The two countries have agreed to reestablish their diplomatic relations, which had been broken for several years. In this process of rapprochement, Rabat and La Paz have also decided to begin the necessary procedures to establish resident diplomatic missions in their respective capitals, namely La Paz and Rabat.

A diplomatic signal

This decision comes in an international context where several countries have reconsidered their positions on the issue of the Sahara. For Rabat, it represents an additional diplomatic support for the UN approach to resolving the dispute. From the Bolivian side, authorities highlight a desire to align with the UN political process and contribute to a negotiated solution. The warming of relations between the two countries could now lead to enhanced bilateral cooperation, both politically and economically, in the months ahead.
